What to Expect

Your First Appointment

We start with an intake and evaluation, which will determine the correct treatment and approach. We encourage you to share all relevant medical history, medications, courses of treatment, etc., so we can thoroughly understand your health history and needs. We may check your pulses—Chinese Medicine style!—look at your tongue, and examine areas of injury or pain, as well as conduct physical examinations to determine the root of injury or illness. We will then begin your treatment, which may include a combination of Acupuncture, Cupping, Electroacupuncture, Tui Na (Chinese medical massage), Guasha, Moxibustion or other modalities we employ according to your needs and comfort.

Most patients can expect to spend 20-40 minutes relaxing on the treatment table with needles in place after our evaluation process, and we may come in and out of the room to adjust needles and apply additional treatment modalities.  During this time you may become extremely relaxed or even fall asleep.  Some people may experience dizziness or movement of energy in the body.  We will leave you with a button to press if you’d like us to return to the room for any reason.

We will let you know the anticipated number and frequency of treatments you’ll need for your specific condition(s).  Acute conditions often require 1-3 treatments/week for 2-4 weeks, and longstanding conditions often require 1-2 treatments/week for 4-8 weeks, though this varies with each individual.  Many people like to receive weekly acupuncture for little tune-up’s, relaxation or support with mental/emotional/spiritual aims.

Please dress comfortably. Loose or stretchy exercise clothes are best.  Also, make sure you eat a couple hours before your treatment.  You are also welcome to bring in your medication list, lab results, x-rays or other diagnostic information that may inform our treatment, and we are happy to collaborate with other practitioners you are working with.  Visit the Client Center for information on how your current care providers can collaborate with Complete Acupuncture on your behalf.

Did You Know?

An excellent way to smooth digestion and boost energy is to eat cooked/steamed/stewed foods.  Since our stomach wants to turn food into 100-degree soup, cooking whole foods prior to eating them saves the body a lot of energy!

Cooked root veggies like carrots and potatoes, for example, are gentle and nourishing to the body.
